Eyes Fixed on Hope

KINDRED Daily Gospel Reflection
Gospel Reading: Luke 21:20-28
Jesus said to his disciples:
“When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is at hand. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains; those within the city escape; those in the countryside must not enter it. For these are days of vengeance … And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads, because your redemption is near at hand.”
Gospel Reflection:“Grace for the Moment You Need”
On a day like today, the Gospel feels heavy: images of turmoil, destruction, fear, displacement — and the mention of “days of vengeance.” But Jesus does not speak simply to terrify. He speaks to awaken. He calls us to remember that suffering, instability, and brokenness are not the end of the story. They are signposts.
When Jesus says, “stand erect and raise your heads,” He is summoning us to look beyond our immediate circumstances — beyond the walls closing in, the storms brewing, the uncertainties of life. He invites us to lift our eyes to eternity.
For many of us, “Jerusalem surrounded by armies” may not mean literal war. It may mean financial strain, relationships under pressure, fear for a loved one’s health, or internal battles of anxiety, despair, or loneliness. When those besieging anxieties come, our impulse is often to shrink, to hide, to brace. But Christ asks a different response: vigilance, uprightness, readiness, hope.
Take heart. In a world that often seems to rush toward chaos, the faithful disciple stands firm — not because of personal strength, but because of divine promise. Our “redemption is near at hand.” The Son of Man has conquered darkness, and nothing earthly — no fear, no trial, no sorrow — can claim victory over the resurrected Lamb.
As you move through today, remember: humility does not demand bowed gazes only. There is dignity — even boldness — in trust, in hope, in expectation.
One thing to do today:
Pause at some point in your day. Look up. Whisper — aloud or in the silence of your heart — “Jesus, I stand with hope.”
Closing Prayer:
Lord Jesus, open my eyes beyond fear. Help me trust Your promise of redemption when life feels like siege. Raise up hope in me, and keep me steadfast in faith. Amen.
