Awake to the Unexpected

KINDRED Daily Gospel Reflection
Gospel Reading: Matthew 24:37–44
Jesus said to his disciples:
"As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in those days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they suspected nothing until the flood came and carried them all away.
So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left; two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left.
Therefore stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come."
Gospel Reflection: “Awake to the Unexpected”
As the liturgical year turns toward Advent, today’s Gospel cuts through our complacency. It beckons us to something essential: wakefulness. In a world comfortable with routines — the morning coffee, the daily commute, the familiar faces — we easily drift into spiritual sleep. But Jesus warns: the coming of the Lord will be sudden, unexpected, like a flood in the days of Noah.
This is not a call to fear-mongering, but to holy readiness. It’s an invitation to live each day as a pilgrimage toward eternity — not with anxiety, but with hope, alertness, and trust.
Notice that Jesus doesn’t point to signs we can predict. Instead, He points to unpredictability. When we don’t know the hour, we must lean not on our planning, but on a vigilant heart rooted in faith. That kind of readiness doesn’t come from last-minute alarms or frantic checklists; it comes from a daily practice of prayer, sacrament, and surrender.
So let this Advent begin by rousing your soul from slumber. Turn away from the distractions that lull you — not simply to “get things done,” but to stand ready for the coming of Christ. Sleep can wait; the Bridegroom draws near.
One Thing To Do Today:
During this busy Sunday, choose one moment to pause: close your eyes, take a deep breath, and silently say: “Come, Lord Jesus; make me watchful.”
Closing Prayer:
Come, Lord Jesus; stir in me a vigilant heart, that I may live each day in light of Your coming. Keep me awake in faith, hope, and love. Amen.
