Greatness in the Kingdom

Greatness in the Kingdom

KINDRED Daily Gospel Reflection

Gospel Reading: Matthew 11:28–30

Jesus praises John the Baptist as the greatest among those born of women, yet says the least in the Kingdom of heaven is greater than he. He speaks of the Kingdom “suffering violence” and identifies John as the Elijah who was to come, preparing the way for the Messiah.

Gospel Reflection: “Rest for the Weary Soul”

Jesus’ words about John are striking: no one born of woman is greater — and yet the least in the Kingdom is greater than he. Earthly measures of greatness are being overturned.

John’s greatness lies in his mission: he points away from himself and toward Christ. He is the friend of the Bridegroom, not the Bridegroom; the voice, not the Word. His entire life is spent preparing others to meet Jesus.

In the Kingdom, greatness is not about status, visibility, or recognition. It is measured by closeness to Christ and likeness to His love. Even the “least” who shares in the life of Christ — through grace, baptism, and the indwelling Spirit — participates in something John only glimpsed from the threshold.

This is deeply consoling. You do not need a dramatic vocation or public ministry to be “great” in God’s eyes. Quiet fidelity, hidden acts of love, patient suffering borne in union with Jesus — these are the marks of Kingdom greatness.

Advent reminds us that the Messiah we await comes in humility. The path to holiness follows the same route.

One Thing To Do Today:

Offer one hidden act of service today — something small and unseen — and deliberately unite it to Jesus, saying: “For love of You and for Your Kingdom.”

Closing Prayer:

Jesus, meek and humble of heart, teach me what true greatness looks like in Your Kingdom. Through the example of John the Baptist, help me point others toward You and find my joy in Your presence. Amen.
