Am I Not Here, Your Mother?

KINDRED Daily Gospel Reflection
Gospel Reading: Luke 1:26–38 - Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
The angel Gabriel is sent by God to Nazareth to announce to Mary that she will conceive and bear a son, Jesus. Troubled at first, Mary is reassured and invited to trust God’s plan. She responds with faith: “May it be done to me according to your word.”
Gospel Reflection: “Am I Not Here, Your Mother?”
On the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Church in the Americas listens again to the Annunciation. Mary receives the Word in her womb; centuries later, at Tepeyac, she comes as a mother to a new people, carrying that same Word in her heart.
In both moments, Mary’s presence is gentle but powerful. She does not draw attention to herself; she points us to her Son. To Juan Diego, she speaks tenderly: “Am I not here, I who am your mother?” Her words echo Gabriel’s message: “Do not be afraid.”
Today’s Gospel reminds us that God’s plans are often surprising, even unsettling. Yet Mary’s “yes” in Nazareth and her maternal care at Guadalupe assure us that we are not asked to respond alone. Grace surrounds us. Heaven bends low in love.
For all who feel unseen, marginalized, or afraid, Our Lady of Guadalupe stands as a sign that God has drawn near — especially to the poor and the small. In her, we meet a mother who listens, consoles, and leads us to Christ.
Let this feast renew your trust: you are held, accompanied, and called — even in the ordinary soil of your own life.
One Thing To Do Today:
Entrust one fear, worry, or family intention to Our Lady. Simply pray: “Our Lady of Guadalupe, my mother, I place this in your hands. Lead me to Jesus.”
Closing Prayer:
Our Lady of Guadalupe, mother of the Americas, draw me close to your Son. Help me to say “yes” to God’s will as you did, and to trust that I am never alone. Cover my family and all who suffer under your mantle of tenderness. Amen.
